Rasha Al-Najjar is an accomplished Agricultural Engineer and a certified educator with over 14 years of experi-
ence in the field of education.
She began her career as a Science Coordinator and has since become a prominent advocate for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education. Currently serving as the Assistant Principal for
the Middle and High school divisions at Al-Hekma International School in Bahrain, Rasha continues to shape the future of STEM education.
STEAM Education

As the field of education continues to evolve, it is increasingly recognized that preparing students for life requires more than just subject-specific knowledge. The emphasis on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education has been growing as a means to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the 21st-century workforce.

The goal of STEAM-based learning is to help students develop a wide range of skills that are applicable across various professions and industries. Whether students choose to pursue careers in STEM fields, the arts, or any other domain, the skills developed through STEAM education are essential for success in today’s rapidly changing world.

Our STEAM policy:

The purpose of this policy is to establish guidelines and expectations for the implementation of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education within our school. This policy aims to promote a comprehensive and engaging STEAM learning environment for all students.

Our vision is to create a school where all students have the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in STEAM fields. We believe that STEAM education is essential for all students, regardless of their background or interests.

Our mission is to provide all students with access to high-quality STEAM instruction, resources, and support. We are committed to creating a positive STEAM culture where all students feel comfortable taking risks and asking questions.

Curriculum Integration:

a. The school integrates STEAM concepts and practices into its curriculum across grade levels and subject areas.

b. Teachers incorporate STEAM-related activities, projects, and challenges that align with the curriculum standards and promote interdisciplinary learning.

STEAM Fair:

Our annual STEAM Fair provides a remarkable platform for our students to showcase their new ideas and innovations. For the past eight years, we have been organizing these fairs and plan to continue this tradition in the future. The STEAM Fair serves as a venue for students to present their innovative projects to a live audience, allowing them to demonstrate their creativity and expertise.

One of the highlights of our STEAM Fair is the recognition and support received by our students. In some cases, the guest speakers were so impressed by the projects that they promised to nominate one or two of them for implementation in the industry. This kind of recognition motivates our students to pursue their innovative ideas further.

Throughout the year, we celebrate our students’ achievements at various school events, acknowledging their dedication and hard work some examples are “Wall Of Fame” and STEM student of the month. The STEAM Fair serves as a catalyst for fostering a culture of innovation and creativity among our students, and we are proud of their accomplishments.

As we move forward, we remain committed to organizing the STEAM Fair annually, providing our students with a platform to showcase their talents and fostering a spirit of innovation within our school community.”

STEAM Winter Challenge :

AHIS has introduced the STEAM Winter Challenge to nurture students’ creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. This initiative not only encourages students to explore their innovative potential but also serves as a valuable formative assessment tool. The STEAM Winter Challenge combines the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics to foster an engaging learning experience that merges scientific concepts with creativity and problem-solving approaches. These students are honored with a free choice activity award and a certificate, acknowledging their remarkable contributions to the STEAM program.

Through our Virtual STEAM Lab, students can explore scientific concepts in an interactive and immersive virtual setting. This platform empowers them to be creative and innovative as they design and create 3D models, enabling a deeper understanding of scientific phenomena. The Virtual STEAM Lab serves as a valuable tool for visualizing and manipulating concepts, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

In addition to the virtual lab, AHIS recognizes the importance of hands-on experiences in traditional physical labs. Our students have demonstrated incredible creativity and innovation through a wide range of projects at AHIS. Some notable examples include the development and implementation of a Solar Urban Design, which provides students with a dedicated area to rest during breaks while also offering the ability to charge their tablets and devices using alternative energy sources such as solar power. Additionally, our students have designed and implemented advanced school security systems, sustainable lighting solutions, and engaging projects in robotics and coding.

One remarkable project is the Solar-Powered Greenhouse, where our students have harnessed solar energy to create an environmentally friendly and sustainable growing environment. This project not only showcases their technical skills but also highlights their commitment to utilizing alternative energy sources for agricultural purposes. Moreover, our Permaculture Educational Garden, adorned with decorations made from recycled materials, has gained recognition for its innovative approach to organic gardening and horticulture.

We are proud to share that the Permaculture Educational Garden has been shortlisted by the Ministry of Education (MOE) for the prestigious Agriculture Production Exhibition. This recognition affirms our belief in a sustainable vision and reinforces our commitment to promoting organic gardening practices and horticultural education among our students.

At AHIS, we prioritize sustainability and encourage our students to think creatively and develop practical solutions that align with our organic gardening and horticulture focus. These projects not only showcase our students’ talents but also inspire them to become responsible global citizens who actively contribute to creating a greener and more sustainable future.

Innovation Hub:

AHIS innovation hub is a space in our school campus where students, teachers, and other members of the school community can come together to create, innovate, and learn.

Our school uses its innovation hub to host students that come together during STEM class and breaks to work on their own projects or to collaborate on projects with other students. It provide students with a space to explore their creativity and to develop new ideas. This can help students to become more innovative thinkers and problem-solvers.

AHIS Innovation-hub offers a class on robotics. In the class, students learn how to develop ideas, create prototypes (assembling robots), and coding.
