The inaugural FLYSYM Landing Challenge was held on Friday, 9th December 2022 with much anticipation. The challenge was organized by KITSPIRE and FLYSYM – a STEM educational program for aspiring pilots to learn the fundamentals of aviation and to fly using a simulator.
The objective of the challenge was to spark early interest in aviation and help participants to get an insight into the world of aircraft and flying. Preparation for the challenge started in the month of April 2022 where the students participated in a 3-stage process of learning, qualifying, and final competition. Around 12 schools from the GCC and 150 students participated in the challenge.
At stage 1 they attended a six-hour workshop over 3 days, where they learned fundamentals of aviation and how to fly a Cessna 182 from an actual certified pilot. Once the students had completed the workshop, they then took an online test and flying challenge in stage 2. At the final stage of the challenge, successful students attended an ATC – Radio communication program and learned pivotal aspects of radio communications through ATC training to enter the final competition.
The final challenge tested the students’ pilot skills in radio communication and landing in a Cessna 182S aircraft. In this challenge, student pilots were required to take off from Hilo International Airport in Hawaii by following all the air traffic control procedures and conduct a flight circuit pattern of upwind, crosswind, downwind, base, final and land the aircraft.
One hundred and fifty students from 12 schools in the region participated in the challenge out of which the below 5 schools and 18 students qualified for the finals. The Millennium School Dubai, UAE; GEMS Our Own Indian School Dubai, UAE; Al Hekma Inter-national School Bahrain; Merry Land International School Abu Dhabi, UAE; and The Winchester School Jebel Ali, UAE.
